What is a Konko Faith Church?
Stress arising from relationships with others, worries about our own health or future, concerns for the well-being of those we love—during the course of life, all of us inevitably face difficulties, anxieties, and emotional burdens.
When we are under such stress, it becomes difficult to think clearly and make sound decisions. Moreover, prolonged stress can disrupt the autonomic nervous system, which affects both physical and mental health. In some cases, it may even hinder the body’s ability to respond to medical treatment.
A church is a place where you can speak openly about your concerns and wishes, find peace of mind, and take time to reflect on your life.
At our church, we first listen carefully and respectfully to each visitor’s story. Through Toritsugi—a sacred mediation in which a person’s prayers are conveyed to God and God’s wishes are conveyed to the person—we share God’s message and explore together perspectives and insights that may not have been apparent before.
Many visitors tell us that after their visit, they feel lighter in spirit and better able to organize their thoughts. Even when circumstances themselves do not immediately change, a change in perspective can often clear away the clouds before us and reveal a new path forward.
Personally, after seventeen years of spiritual training, I have come to appreciate the preciousness of everyday life and the blessing of simply being alive. I was deeply moved by the beautiful blue skies I saw in Mongolia and Nepal, only to realize that the very same sky stretches above Japan as well. We often pass through life unaware of the countless blessings that have already been given to us.
The purpose of this church is not to persuade anyone to adopt a particular belief. Rather, it is to help people recognize the many blessings they may have taken for granted, cultivate a heart of gratitude through such awareness, develop the inner strength to move forward regardless of circumstances, and live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
There is no distinction between long-time followers and first-time visitors. In fact, about half of those who visit our church are Buddhists or people with no particular religious affiliation.
We do not ask anyone to join our faith, nor do we request donations or financial contributions. Please feel free to visit with the same spirit you might bring to a visit to a Shinto shrine. (Konko Faith is one of the traditions within Sect Shinto.) We warmly welcome everyone.
